Weekend Link Roundup

Random things I’ve clicked on around the interwebs this past week:

ABC News: Donations Pouring in for Elderly Man Who Called 911 for Food
THERE’S SOMETHING IN MY EYE.

Pilot Online: Va. Beach taxpayers find drive-through appealing
I tweeted this the other day but thought it was worth mentioning again. I was kind of dismayed when I opened my personal property tax bill (aka car tax), so I was super excited to read this story. In Virginia Beach, you can appeal your personal property tax bill through a drive-through service. No, really! I went on Friday–it was pretty early before noon, and there were only three or four cars ahead of me in line. I was out of there within five minutes and they reduced my bill by $20. Not bad for five minutes of waiting time! Kudos to the city for offering this service.

RT Booklovers Con on Twitter: Giant Book Fair
This is yesterday’s Giant Book Fair at the RT Convention, where I am tentatively planning on going with a friend/former coworker/fellow romance junkie in 2017. SO MANY AUTHORS AND BOOKS. (Click or tap the image for the panoramic shot.)

Random things I’ve clicked on around the interwebs this past week:

Vistaprint – The Postcard
No, YOU teared up from watching this commercial.

Emily McDowell: Empathy Cards for Serious Illness
My favorite: “Please let me be the first to punch the next person who tells you everything happens for a reason.”

Magic Mike XXL Trailer
It is here and it is glorious.

Ars Technica: Hostage saves herself via Pizza Hut app
I can’t get over this story. What if the employees had assumed it was just a prank, ignored it, and didn’t call the police? Crazy.

Wired: Carly Fiorina Forgot to Register a Very Important Website
You’d think if one was running for President, one would make sure to register all domain extensions of one’s name to avoid things like this.

Random things I’ve clicked on around the interwebs this past week:

StarTalk – National Geographic Channel
Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast is now a TV show and it’s awesome. Thankfully, it’s on the NatGeo channel, which we actually get!

NPR Music: Dwight Yoakam’s ‘Second Hand Heart’ Is First Class
I listened to the album the other night and really enjoyed it. Yoakam is consistently good.

The Guardian: Going Clear: the film Scientologists don’t want you to see
If you haven’t seen the HBO documentary yet, this piece is a good summary. And it’s written by John Sweeney, who gave us the amazing BBC Panorama stories on Scientology.

Independent Bookstore Day was yesterday, but to my dismay, my local independent bookstore in Virginia Beach didn’t really have anything special going on. So I looked at Powell’s photos and wistfully remembered my visit to Portland.

Lastly, the S’mores Frappuccino is a thing that exists and I love it so, so much.
